Why not horns?

I’ve owned a lot of speakers over the years but I have never experienced anything like the midrange reproduction from my horns. With a frequency response of 300 Hz. up to 14 Khz. from a single distortionless driver, it seems like a no-brainer that everyone would want this performance. Why don’t you use horns? MORE

Demanding more bass

Paul McGowan writes: I was in the process of posting today’s Ask Paul video on the difficulty of designing power amplifiers when I was reminded of the lengths some speaker designers were willing to go for bass. I was thinking of Arnie Nudell’s Infinity Kappa series, the terror of solid state amplifier manufacturers the world […]

Speakers or amp; which upgrade should come first in this system?

A little advice from you guys please. I used to be happy with the set up I had, which consisted of Micromega CD player, Micromega A60 amplifier, Project Debut Mk3 turntable, Canton LE207 floorstanders and Chord cables. This was all linked into a moderate surround-sound set up for my DVDs including Monitor Audio Radius rears and […]

PC audio second rate quality?

OK, so I’ve replaced the CD player with a PS audio DAC and using the Pioneer Blu-ray as a transport and the improvement in sound is a lot better than expected, my attention is now drawn to the sound quality from my PC. It’s generally very good but the Pioneer/PS audio combo leaves it behind. […]

When people ask me now I try and be as gentle as possible and focus more on being supportive without being cruel or dismissive.

Paul McGowan writes: Let me set the scene for you. You’re at a dinner party, the folks that invited you have worked their hearts out to make a lovely meal, but it’s not to your liking. And then your worst fears come true. “How was your food?” She asks so nicely, filled with expectations (and hope). […]

‘I found out something about myself’

I recently found out something about myself, and I think it informs some of the questions and debates that audiophiles have. When I started down this path some years ago, I thought I was a “they are here” music lover; that is, I was seeking to bring, say, the Berlin Philharmonic into my listening room. […]

“God I’m sick of hifi”

All the boxes, all the cables, all the crap… So all I have is up for sale, and is already replaced with bluetooth, active speaker, idevice and, for old times sake, an LP12 running a bluetooth preamp. Yes, that is speaker singular, an omnidirectional beoplay device. Yes, I have a suddenly busy life, and yes, […]

Did music evolve in the same way and for the same reason?

Paul McGowan writes:  There’s increasing evidence that rhymes, poems, meter and cadence in stories were created not because they are beautiful but because they helped us keep the words straight before the advent of written language.  It is how our civilization kept important lessons, histories, messages and stories intact without writing anything down. Imagine any […]

…… but not all products lend themselves to online sales.

Paul McGowan writes: My son Scott bought a really cool watch online for his girlfriend’s birthday.  He took it to a watch repair shop to have the band adjusted and got scolded for buying online. “Shame on you”.  This admonishment despite the fact the watch repair shop didn’t carry the brand bought and had no […]

200 hour review nonsense

Just read (scanned) the Australian review of the new Rega dac in the trade + reviews section. The chap makes mention of things improving significantly after 200 hours playing time. Now, this is something that gets bandied a LOT in reviews and it’s generally around the 200 hour mark that is the norm for apparent […]

What happens in a vacuum?

Paul McGowan writes: Vacuums suck (sorry, just couldn’t resist the joke)…but it’s not too far from wrong. It’s really the problem behind the classic AB test method: replace one piece of gear with another to form a value judgment. We all do it, but is it as definitive as we might hope? The answer has a […]
