Paul McGowan writes: I’m not sure how this thread morphed into a How I built this about volume controls but things have a tendency to just drift in a certain direction. But, I ramble on. In yesterday’s post, I told the story of boiling the innards of a volume control down to nothing more than a […]

This may be a silly question, from a variety of perspectives, but here goes. Folks on here occasionally mention a sound quality often referred to as “congested”, usually when the volume gets liberally applied. I’ve paid careful attention to this in my own experiences, and noticed that the volume at which I hear this effect […]
Hey everyone, I am looking for some cheap tweaks, i just got done putting in a inner tube under my componets as an isolation device, and it works great. What else would you reccomend?..i am also thinking of an inner tube under the spkrs, with some sort of device to keep them stable. What do […]

My SBT and sonos, I’ve basically giving up listening to music because of them, ….the reason, I find they are never connected to my wifi when I go to listen and its hopeless trying to get them to sync up. Maybe its my router, but why does my ps3, ipad, and laptop have no problem. […]
Currently I have a macbook (stripped of everything but the software I use to stream music with, via USB and an ultraviolet USB cable to the USB input on ny Shanling cd2.1 player. The player outputs over some very nice cables I picked up here to an Audible illusions preamp which (over bluejeans 15ft coax) […]
I’m thinking of getting some new kit after a two year break. I have been using my laptop with all my CD’s ripped and quite a few FLAC albums. This has been fed into a pair of Monitor Audio WS100 speakers and I am more than happy with this set up. I think no doubt […]
Paul McGowan writes: Years ago, there were mostly passive subs, but over time this changed. Modern subwoofers are internally amplified. So it might seem intuitive to connect them as you would any power amplifier, with an interconnect to the preamp or DAC. This works, but would not be my first choice. The problem with cables and […]

It seems impossible to narrow down all the good choices. I feel overwhelmed because I want to purchase a 300-400w amp in the $7000 range and there are so many options. I want it to be my last power amp purchase for at least the next 20 years. I’ve considered Bryston, Classe, Mcintosh, and Parasound. […]
The thread starts ….. I have an LP12 that I have owned for 10+ years. It is the basic model. I am getting back into analog and was wondering should I upgrade my LP12 or just buy a new table? I have a friend who has suggested the VPI Super Scoutmaster so that is at […]
Okay, we love our hobby: we love the music, the equipment, the esoterica, and the deranged quest for perfection the likes of which would make even the greats of classical composition shake their heads. But you’ve got to admit that there exists a certain ‘attitude’ among some of our group that can be….. […]
I was thinking the other day what is the one thing I own that I got and it surprised me how much I like it and use it. For me it is the Music Hall PH 25.2 headphone amp. I use it all the time and it sounds so good I would not want to […]
It’s Sunday, I started on the Rioja about ten hours ago, but, listening to some really beautiful music via my now restored music system (my MDAC has returned from Czech this week) I’m rather more aware that the job of listening to music at home is a task of minimising losses, and nothing in the […]
I earned a living in journalism all my working life.I like and support audio mags, I try to understand the pressures they are under. No sensible person can assume that personal opinions will not colour a review. In the end these things are a matter of opinion, not rock-solid fact. Given all that,I still have one question […]
Years ago Cd’s in box sets used to be packed with foam inserts holding Cd’s in place. I probably should have removed the inserts at that time because now I find that some of them have deteriorated to the point where they leave a sticky substance and bits of foam on the non-playing side of […]
I recently had the good fortune to listen to a half a dozen pretty well-regarded speakers back-to-back. For these kind of sessions I like using piano recordings – either solo or jazz trio – as a measure because, to my ear at least, it seems that speakers that can reproduce piano really well seem to […]
Well I was phoned by a fellow wammer who said that he had a system that I might be interested in hearing. Parts of the system was on loan and without doubt it is one of the best that the company offers. Well what could I say but ‘you bet ya……..’ Around I go and […]
The thread starts as follows: “I was wondering how far we have really advanced in terms of equipment design, for example how much difference is there between a cost no object Turntable for the 70s or 80s to now, Have we truly progressed or is mostly just better packaging. I can see over the last […]
“Okay, so I used to think that listener fatigue meant that your ears just kind of got tired from listening to speakers that were overly bright. I don’t have a good understanding of the make up of an ear, but I believe there are muscles in an ear that, I guess, expand and contract while […]

Paul McGowan writes: I am going to stick my neck out and make you a wager. I’ll bet that if I crept into your home one night and swapped +/- on each of your speakers that you’d not notice the difference. Yet, in the heat of the moment during a listening session you’d hear the […]
I have no problem noticing a 1db increase in volume. So where does the 3db rule come from? I’m currently using a Meridian 501 pre with 1db increments. 3db sounds very significant. Am I alone here? Interesting responses can be viewed HERE
Does blind testing only remove visual bias from the process of assessing the sound of a product or does it introduce a series of confounding variables into the process that might not be well understood and can easily skew the results? I fall on the side of it just removing bias, but then I’m comfortable […]
