Looking to try an Acrylic platter on my Systemdek 11x – I’ve seen options from 10mm (same as original glass platter) up to 20mm. Is thicker better? Going bigger than 10mm would mean spending more but also investing in a VTA adjuster for my RB250 so opinions on whether it’s worth it would be appreciated.

Editor McCauley in conversation with Howard Popeck: So there are more figureheads than gifted designers. Is that what you’re saying? Not quite like that. In my direct personal experience I’ve met more figureheads than gifted designers. But that’s not to say that my experiences are representative of the entire industry. One has to take into […]

So no, we aren’t coming to the end. Not yet. (Long pause) Okay. I used to sell the Albarry monoblocs. Damn fine sound. Clever designer. Still sounds good today. Not a hero as such but worthy of an honourable mention. Then whoever designed the A&R A60. A truly great product. In its way a classic. […]
Q1: What does Osibisa mean? The name Osibisa was described in lyrics, album notes and interviews as meaning “criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness” but it actually comes from “osibisaba” the Fante word for highlife. Q2: What does Woyaya mean? Woyaya means “we keep going” in a Ghanaian language called Ga.
As the title says – what are the symptoms that a cartridge needs to be retired? The cartridge in question is an ADC XLM MkII that I’ve been using for a few years, but it’s definitely old and probably saw use (unsure how much) before I got it. It just sounds… flat. It’s one of […]
A frequent question I receive is “Will I hear the difference?” My answer is simple. “How should I know?“ A bit curt you might think. At face value, it is. But if you look beneath the superficiality, my answer is both objective and rational, to say nothing of truthful. This is because I am not […]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OR25MqPWuc Elvis the C when he was at the top of his game. I saw this way back when and recorded it onto cassette from the cheap TV! Listened to it often for years – a great version. I don’t agree you go up there and do the hits note for note. He and the […]

Good morning Howard. I have seen new and used audio equipment on eBay offered at bargain prices in the USA into the UK. Good idea or what? Buyer beware! First, remember you will have to pay import duty, plus vat at 20% when the purchase comes into the UK. So add at least 23% to […]

OK folks, a ladyfriend of ours wants to buy her hubby a turntable BUT sadly ONLY wants to spend £100. My dear wife pointed out that I was a bit of a hifi nerd(misguided!) so thought I could sort things out for her(?) I’ve tried the “oh, you can’t get anything for £100, BUT Richer […]
You might be surprised by the fact that many new vinyl releases today actually are recorded, mixed and mastered digitally before being transferred to vinyl. Are you? Perhaps not; in which case, no matter. It probably won’t negatively influence what follows here. Many studios today are digital based and it’s easier for musicians to record […]
Robin Meadows · Michael Lee-Kapsalis, MM Music & Vocal Performance, Indiana University (2001) There was friction between everyone when they wrote and recorded Under Pressure together. The song was written not just by Freddie and David but by Queen and David. In fact, it was John Deacon who came up with the bass line. However, […]
The RIAA curve is a rather dramatic equalization network applied to record albums and 45s over the last half-century. Why is it there, what does it do, and when can we expect it to be retired? Watch Now
Howard Popeck: An insight into how many makers define the retail price of a product might be of interest. Generally, the manufacturing cost per item (sometimes with the R&D cost amortized, or not as the case maybe) is multiplied by say 10, 15 or 21 – or any other number that springs to mind, albeit […]
I am a magazine addict. Yes, I’ve said it. It’s relief – and I’m unashamed. Will you read on after this revelation? I very much hope so. Details; well not just hifi mags but ones on both analogue and digital photography, rock music, cars, blues music, classical music and, err, that’s about it. So what’s […]
