Dangerous topic; but this is not about cable wars, rather about the logic of the debate. There are two basic disputes (a) whether properly designed cables sound different at all, and (b) if they can sound different, what preference should be attached to that difference. Note here that the debate about whether a category of […]

Ground Cable Your components are grounded. Your AC wall outlet is grounded. Why aren’t your circuit boards? We’ve found that most audio circuit boards are not connected to an AC ground leading to less than optimal sonic results. Our Ground Cables improve the performance of your system by providing these boards with a direct path […]
Hi guys, I finally have the option of using balanced cables since my new amp purchase (Plinius Hautonga) now has balanced outputs which my previous amp doesn’t. I’m thinking of connecting it between the Hautonga amp and the M-DAC. I can’t find any reviews for balanced cables in WHF/HFC so am depending on your kind […]
Paul McGowan writes: I never connect my stereo equipment with single ended cables if I can avoid their use. Balanced cables always sound better. I am surprised this is still new information for many people, and not just newbies entering the field. Perhaps part of the reason is slow acceptance by manufacturers of audio equipment […]
Paul McGowan: Here’s an interesting piece of history for you. Before the cable companies existed, no one paid any attention to the wires or cables used to connect our systems. Speakers were connected to power amps through lamp cord purchased at the local electrical store without any fanfare. We knew heavier sounded better, but that […]
Paul McGowan ……… In my new found quest to figure out why power cables made a difference in my preamplifier circuit I began to suspect that I wasn’t adding fullness or, for that matter, anything to the preamp’s sound but rather guessed that what must be happening is one of degrading in the first place. […]
“I used to have $4,000 Kimber Select speaker cable, $1,800 Kimber Select and $2,000 Nordost Tyr balanced interconnects. Why does this $15 a foot (yes, that’s fifteen dollars a foot) cable sound more neutral and like live music than other “high end” cables that I’ve tried? I listen to live classical/jazz about 5 times a […]
I’ve been aware for a long time that some speaker cables are designated as “directional”. To a limited extent I can understand the rational behind choices based on wire size and construction, biwiring, etc. but don’t understand how any conductor can have directional characteristics even in a DC circuit. I’m not denying the possibility but […]
Hi All, Recently just for fun I purchased a short run of “expensive” speaker cable ($9/ft) and have been A/B-ing it in my system with great delight. I used to believe that there wasn’t much difference at all and that cable was cable. But now I have proven to myself that there are differences that […]
Paul McGowan writes: When we compare sound quality between a set of Mogami XLR cables and Audioquest WEL silver XLR cables is there a difference to be heard in Music Room One? Watch Now
Paul McGowan writes: There must not be enough worms crawling around so I figure I’ll just go ahead and open a fresh can. Keeps it fun that way. Why is it we’re convinced we can hear changes in polarity, or MQA vs. non MQA, or the difference between CD and vinyl—but find it hard to accept […]

I was just over on Audioholics, and was reading their review of the 25th anniversary version of the Legacy Audio Focus SE when I came across this little comment in the review: Better than that, though, Legacy’s user manual gives consumers a basic lessen in cable physics. It’s a good read, and I loved the […]
Matthew Sparkes (The Daily Telegraph) writes: Manufacturers claim cables costing thousands of pounds per metre can offer better sound and image quality. Are we failing to get the best from our equipment by using cheap cables – or are high-end leads a waste of cash? You always get a free cable in the box: a […]

Since making a spread sheet with my audio system prices, I have been thinking(shocked) about my total investment in cables. My total system retails at $67,000 (Digital and analog front ends included). I purchased all of it here on Audiogon so my investment is about 50%. Of that I have about 10% invested in interconnects […]
For the last 30 years I have always ensured that my cables run in the same direction i.e. the writing runs from the amp to the speakers. This was a claim made way back which kind of has a logic in how the strands are manufactured. Is this still considered the case? Opinions please. Norrie
