HELIUS: The evolution of tonearm design and consider aspects of various designs that most influenced my approach to Helius

Geoffrey Owen - head of Helius Designs writes:

In this episode I’m going to discuss the evolution of tonearm design and consider aspects of various designs that most influenced my approach to Helius.

My own hi-fi journey started with the most classical of 1970’s choices – an SME 3009 mounted on a Thorens TD125 MKII and an Ortofon cartridge. As a student, it took a couple of years to save up for the system which also included Quad amps and Celestion Ditton 25 speakers.

Looking back on the 1970’s, tonearm design was notable for geographical differences. Europe was trending towards low eff. mass arms like the SME and the Michell Transcriptor ( from an old friend John Michell – who was also a close friend of Stanley Kubrick of 2001 fame ) In contrast, Japanese designs like Fidelity Research produced decidedly heavy-weight arms (FR64).
