VINYL: Records Cut Into Salvaged X-ray Films

 

Jonathan Barkan writes: This is one of the coolest ways I’ve seen of putting together a vinyl record. Apparently, back in the 1950′s, Russians who wanted to hear and share music would go dumpster diving at local hospitals to salvage exposed X-ray slides with the intent of repurposing them into vinyl records. According to author Anya von Bremzen, these people would then, “…cut a crude circle out with manicure scissors and use a cigarette to burn a hole.

Von Bremzen continues, saying:

“You’d have Elvis on the lungs, Duke Ellington on Aunt Masha’s brain scan — forbidden Western music captured on the interiors of Soviet citizens.”
