READERS’ LETTERS: Beatles self criticism?

TL writes:

Paul McCartney was generally fairly realistic when assessing Beatles’ songs.

However, he inexplicably once said that his favorite Beatles song was “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number).”

And there were Beatles songs that he didn’t like. For example, he didn’t like “She Said She Said”, “Revolution No. 9”, “Yer Blues” and “Across the Universe” —all by Lennon. Now the first three are not to everyone’s taste, although I think they’re all great in their own right. But “Across the Universe” was described by Lennon as “one of my best songs” and that’s a more realistic viewpoint than McCartney’s.

Lennon was, on the other hand, often scathing in his criticism of Beatles songs. He was hardest on his own songs, calling “And Your Bird Can Sing” “a horror” and “It’s Only Love” “terrible.”

And there were McCartney songs that he wasn’t fond of, too. He thought that “Yesterday” didn’t have great lyrics. “It doesn’t say anything,” he complained. And he hated “Let It Be.” But he liked the majority of McCartney’s songs and said that his favorite was “Hey Jude.”

George Harrison’s favorite Beatles songs were “Norwegian Wood,” “Because,” “I Want You She’s So Heavy” and “Strawberry Fields Forever,” all Lennon composed.
