READERS’ LETTERS: What type of cable terminations are best?

Mr. R writes ...

Terminations are only required for bundling odd shaped, large or solid conductors, or pre terminated for people that have trouble terminating conductors them self. Use indeed spades, these allow much, much higher contact pressure than banana’s. But, any stranded conductor fitting straight into the terminal of the amplifier or speaker: go straight without termination. I get it, that you spend a fortune on high quality, low resistance, speaker cables. But why on earth would you add 2 extra contact resistances (conductor-termination on both sides) and make the two unavoidable contact resistances (cable – terminal), most likely worse. Stranded conductors press fitted into shape in the speaker or amplifier terminal have much better contacts then going through any inbetween termination. However you have got to be careful, not cutting off strands when stripping the insulation jackets and not shorten terminals with strands that are not properly bundled into the terminal.
