Q&A / LITTLE RICHARD: What was he referencing in his song, ‘Tutti Frutti’?

NEIL ANDERSON ...

To fully understand the song you need to scrutinise the lyric. Now, there’s a lot of repetition, but the verses are:

Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
A wop bop a loo bop a lop ba ba

I got a gal, named Sue, she knows just what to do
I got a gal, named Sue, she knows just what to do
She rock to the East, she rock to the West
But she's the gal that I love best

I got a gal, named Daisy, she almost drives me crazy
Got a gal, named Daisy, she almost drives me crazy
She knows how to love me, yes indeed
Boy you don't know what she do to me

(tutti frutti lyrics from Google)

So, Mr Penniman has a couple of girls, that, well, know what to do and drive him crazy. I would assume it’s not because they make splendid pies.

Fair enough.

But these weren’t the original lyrics.

At first it went

Tutti Frutti, good booty
If it don't fit, don't force it
You can grease it, make it easy

Tutti Frutti, good booty
If it's tight, it's all right
And if it's greasy, it makes it easy
