VINYL: Is there better stereo separation in older pressings?

Most of my real listening is on vinyl. I don't even own a cd player, or have a disc drive on my computer. One of the things I've noticed of late is that I like the sound on older records than I do on newer pressings. For example, I have a newer pressing of Rubber Soul and an older one, and aside from pops and crackles, the older one, in my opinion, sounds more engaging. I think I may have bought a digital remaster printed on vinyl (which pisses me off,) but more than that, I notice a lot more panning. I hear whole vocal or guitar lines in one channel on the older record and a more balanced approach on newer records. Is there any merit to this thinking, or has anyone else at least noticed it? I'm wondering if it's just different styles for different times.
