  1. One of those bands where it’s really surprising they existed at all – like the Kinks. How and why did it happen, that a bunch of youngsters could get together and produce music that was actually so much better than it needed to be?

    And how come their particular sound hasn’t been copied more often? They still sound unique, and I sit there with a big grin on my face every time I put their music on – but I have to ration myself.

    At one time, presumably, as a young person you could have street cred, be trendy, be in touch with the latest music scene *and* enjoy a good tune. Ultra-sophisticated people might have eventually graduated onto Stockhausen and Harrison Birtwistle at around 50 years of age, but today’s young people seem to have sublimated directly from One Direction into fully-fledged musique concrète at about 18.
