Presenters on commercial radio, he says, tell him stories “of being instructed to give a station ident [its slogan] coming out of the record they’re playing, to spend no more than six seconds of music-free speech-time before they go into the next track, another station ident… And all the tracks have been chosen for them.” He looks troubled. “There’s not a lot of scope for self-expression.”
