CHUCK PROPHET: Night Surfer (CD+LP)

Night Surfer (CD+LP)

“Night Surfer” was recorded in Prophet’s beloved San Francisco and in Nashville.  Earlier this year, he told WSJ Speakeasy he was working with a familiar team. “It’s much of the same cast of characters from the last album,” said Prophet, a linchpin in the legendary cowpunk group Green on Red. “Brad Jones is producing again. Paul Kolderie, who worked on a few Radiohead albums, is helping us improve the sonics. Peter Buck came in to play and bring some jangle to it.

“It’s a kind of a dystopian-themed record,” he added.  “I look around at my hometown and the world and try to imagine where it’s going to be 20 or 30 years from now.”

New songs with titles like “Countrified Inner City Technological Man,” “Lonely Desolation” and “Felony Glamour” may hint at Prophet’s view of the future.  In a press release, he said, “I don’t want to come off as against everything; you need to be for something too.  This record is all about a musical path forward, about looking around and imagining where we’ll be in 20 years if we just follow that path.”(wsj)
