Vasily Petrenko conducts violinist Baiba Skride in an unmissable release, says Geoffrey Norris

For the past five years or so, Vasily Petrenko’s name in the context of CDs has been associated primarily, but by no means exclusively, with the revelatory series of Shostakovich symphonies he has been conducting with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on the Naxos label, soon to be completed with the release of the Symphony No 13. Last year, he combined his Liverpool job with that of chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic, a partnership that has already yielded a fine Ondine disc of the two Shostakovich cello concertos with Truls Mørk (ODE 1218-2).
