DIGITAL ROOM EQUALISATION: Is it a gimmick or does it have some application in domestic situations?

Neil, regarding digital room equalisation, is it a gimmick or does it have some application in domestic situations?

I have heard these things in operation and I suppose that if you are prepared to spend any time experimenting and moving loudspeakers then it's a good shortcut to a sort of middling performance. But by and large, in the same way that I am not really a fan of loudness controls or tone controls, twiddling with the frequency response to try and move a room mode – I don't think it’s the right way to do it.

Is there a better way?

Yes, I think in some cases there are. My own room has two walls treated and the wooden floor in the Victorian house has been moved and two old fashioned yard by yard paving slabs attached to the ground, fitted underneath, so that the loudspeakers are really earthed – so to speak. And I did notice that that made an enormous difference and was helpful.
