REGA: What’s the most I should spend on a cartridge for a Rega Planar 3?

I've got the original Rega Planar 3 with an upgraded motor (this was an older upgrade, not the newer 24v one) and the standard RB300 arm. A few years back I pushed the boat out and spent £300 or so on a Goldring 2500 MM cart which now needs a new stylus, but I got a shock when I saw that they go for upwards of £250. At the time I was very happy with the purchase, and it did sound like a step up from the 1042 it replaced, but even so I've often wondered if the 2500 was probably a bit fancy for the Rega and that maybe I paid for more cartridge than I was ever going to be able to hear.

So should I go for the new stylus, or is there a better option? This is the only TT I've ever owned, so I haven't very much experience in these matters. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. edit: By the way, I listen to a mixture of brand new albums and old (but properly cleaned) 45's bought from boot sales etc, which probably hasn't done the stylus much good ... another reason why I wonder if I should be maintaining this expensive (to me, anyway) cart!
