MO FOSTER: ….. ‘back in February 2016, I put together a band of the finest players for a gig at the Pizza Express Jazz Club’ …..

NB: The above is just one of Mo's extensive instrument collection. It has no relevance to the post below; we just happened to like the image. Yes, it is 'effectively an EB3 and an SG on one body' says Mo. Anyway, moving on .....

Mo tells us .....

I had been a fan of Gil Evans' music for many years and in 1983 I was extremely thrilled to get a call — whilst on tour in the USA with Phil Collins — inviting me to tour with the Gil Evans British Orchestra. The band consisted mainly of luminaries from the UK jazz scene, including John Marshall, Stan Sulzman, Ray Russell, John Taylor, John Surman, and Henry Lowther. It was a treat.

I'd begun to miss the buzz of live performance and, back in February 2016, I put together a band of the finest players for a gig at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Dean Street: Ray Russell, Malcolm Edmonstone, Chris Biscoe, Nic France, and Corrina Silvester.

The sound I was aiming for was Gil Evans in miniature: structured, carefully arranged, with beautiful harmonies and melodies, and with room for great solos.
We played partly re-worked standards such as 'Django', ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’, ‘Three Views Of A Secret’, ‘Gone’, and also some tunes from my solo albums.

In spite of there being almost no rehearsal it was a wonderful night, and the guys played brilliantly.

I'm now setting up to record an album (possibly live) and to tour later in the year.

Cheers
Mo
