LFD AUDIO: DIY tweaking of their products

Occasionally I get a phone call or email about tweaking of a piece of LFD Audio electronics. Howard …. how about changing internal wiring, removing filters, adding better ones, inserting very expensive fuses making tweaks that seem obvious?

I have two thoughts on this: first, there isn’t a product in the world that cannot be changed or tweaked upon and second, wouldn’t it make more sense to spend some quality time learning all there is to know and enjoy with this these wonderful electronic creations?

Take any product, like this my Apple MacBookPro I’m writing on. I’m certain I could better its performance – if I knew what to do (which I don’t) or find a person that for certain knew what to do – which I don’t. Despite the fact I have the maximum allowable RAM installed, I’ll bet if I searched hard enough someone has a hack to add even more. And the video card I’m using to view the info on this computer: surely there’s a faster one.

But to what end? If I were having speed issues with my device, there’s no question of what to do, but I’m not. In fact, it works amazingly well and I’m enjoying its better-than-merely-acceptable performance.

The seemingly endless quest for better is what helps our industry thrive, yet it can be a bit overwhelming to many. Most people I know are happy as can be with what they have – just as I am. From time to time I dig out a Zero LE Mk 3, now a few years old. Of course it doesn’t have the grunt of my NCSE Mk2 – but the sound into my Vandersteen 2CE Signature speakers via it is glorious

Of course at some point I too will get an itch to persuade Dr. Bews to explore the next horizon, build on (say) the DAC5’s success and learned lessons. It’s in my nature; and possibly his too – although with him, little is certain.

But for now, I’m still exploring all there is to know on this very high plateau of sonic excellence that LFD Audio have achieved. There’s lots more to discover here before moving on to the next hill and for me, because the designs are ‘right’ to my ears – first time – I have no interest in tweaking – unless Dr. Bews does the tweaking.
