Is ‘re-mastered’ ever better?

As a soppy consumer I used to purchase ‘re-mastered’ versions of my favourite pop/rock/blues albums. Every single one of them (bar none) is worse than my original uncompressed hissy AAD mastered 80s/90s CD (assuming they haven’t got those annoying holes in as they slowly decompose).

Now that I have all my CDs on my PC (non-audiophile) I can scoot around my collection comparing recordings of the same album like never before. It seems to me re-mastered just mean louder to the point of distortion and reduced dynamic range.

Is it just my collection and the genre of music I listen to?
