With hindsight, what was the cost of the Flat Earth hegemony?

The thread starts: Quite an empire -a large dealer network and influential magazines of the day all toeing the line. The effect on me was that when I got my first proper job I couldn't see past the famous turntable and it's accoutrements. My then local dealer, Russ Andrews High Fidelity did a roaring trade. It was a lot of fun but looking back it's made me think about the opportunity cost of blind faith. What avenues might I have gone down instead?
