Mott The Hoople frontman Ian Hunter tells Andrew Perry about Bowie, band breakups, and playing bigger gigs than in their Seventies heydey

Mott the Hoople, one of the great bands of the glam-rock era, are about to play the biggest gig of their career. The band, whose landmark hit All the Young Dudes was written for them by David Bowie in 1972, are to headline the O2 Arena, as well as four other large halls around the country.  It’s as if these inveterate rockers, whose other star fans have included Noel Gallagher, Def Leppard and the Clash, are finally getting their due, some 40 years after their heyday.  “We never played in venues that size in the old days,” notes singer Ian Hunter – who is still, at the age of 74, unmistakably adorned by blond corkscrew curls and elusive behind dark glasses. “It’s kind of like, woo! We’ve gone up to the Premiership – at last!”
